How much should a forex trader earn to be considered successful?

Hello everyone! There is a lot of talk about how a successful forex trader should earn no less than 100500% profit per month. Otherwise, he is a loser.

The other day in our VKontakte group there was a poll about what minimum % profit per month a trader should earn to be considered successful. The results (more on them just below) turned out to be quite interesting. The second most popular option is 5-10%. But let us not forget that the poll was about the MINIMUM monthly return. That is, we mean there will be months with higher returns, but not lower. The 5-10% option is realistic, and it is good that many people understand that.

What was surprising (though not especially) was that almost 17% of respondents believe that without a return of 100% per month there is nothing to do in forex....

People, do you really think you will steadily double your deposit every month? Let us look at what would happen with such a return (100%) starting from a $1000 deposit.

Below you can see two charts. Both charts show the annual returns of two different traders.

The red line marks the return chart of an aggressive trader. He earned an impressive 300% over the year. The yellow line marks the return chart of a conservative trader who follows money management, does not inflate lot sizes, follows all the rules, and aims more for stability than for return. His return was 50% for the year.

Which trader will an investor with a hundred bucks in his pocket choose? In 90% of cases, the aggressive trader with the high return.
Which trader will an investor with, say, a million rubles choose? In 100% of cases, the stable trader, even if his return is lower.

Understand this: big money loves a quiet harbor. To a person with decent money, a jumping chart, even with high returns, looks like clowning around. As a rule, people with money are calm about small drawdowns, do not get upset about the manager’s commission, and are generally reasonable.

So who will invest in an aggressive trader? Mostly hysterical people with a hundred bucks who panic at the slightest drawdown. Do you need such investors?

Now let us calculate what happens with the same return but with investors’ funds involved. Suppose you gathered $1 million under management (that is not difficult), and earned the same 50% annually. In money terms, that is $500000. Suppose you set a capital management fee of 30% of the profit. That means your own earnings would amount to $150000 per year. Quite good, considering that you risked the same one thousand dollars of your personal capital.
